The Systems Engineering team carry out Systems Engineering activities covering the full lifecycle for Minewarfare Sonar, including the growing area of remote/autonomous systems.

A vacancy has arisen for an experienced Systems Engineering Manager to lead the Systems Engineering activities in the Mine Counter Measures (MCM) side of the business- specifically the MMCM MOAS Subsystem.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

The role may include, but not be limited to the following activities:

  • Generation and maintenance of the Systems Engineering Work Package Agreements
  • Generation and maintenance of Systems Engineering Management Plans
  • The successful execution of system engineering activities to budget and schedule; management and oversight of the lower-level engineering work packages
  • Generation of the Systems Engineering schedules and monthly updates to reflect progress
  • Identification of systems risks and management of mitigation actions with monthly status updates
  • Support of the generation and maintenance of the Integration, Verification, Validation and Qualification Plan
  • Production of monthly reports on the progress, issues and decisions associated with the  engineering aspects of each project – dashboard reporting
  • Organisation of Change Review Boards associated with the systems activities
  • Production of engineering metrics in accordance with the project requirements
  • Organisation of all mandated systems reviews
  • Organisation of the work of the allocated systems engineers
  • Support to the preparation of System Engineering estimates for bids.
  • Conduct of people-development reviews on an annual basis (PDD, AAD) for the team and monitoring of individuals’ development actions.

  • Delivery of Systems Engineering artefacts on time, to budget and of required quality
  • Good working relationship with all parties identified above
  • Adherence to Chorus 2 (Thales’s Process) and CMMi Level 3 principles7



Principal Relationships:


  • The Systems Engineering Group Manager covering the Remote Systems perimeter
  • Systems Engineers in the team and/or programme
  • The relevant Product/Project Design Authorities
  • The relevant Project Manager(s)
  • The individual discipline design teams – acoustics, hardware, software, mechanical etc



  • Demonstrable relevant systems engineering experience in the defence industry (typically complex systems with software content).
  • Knowledge of the complete system engineering lifecycle.
  • Planning of (system) engineering activities


  • Knowledge of Autonomous and/or Remotely operated platforms/systems
  • Knowledge of marine platforms (electro-mechanical)
  • Knowledge of maritime domain operations and/or products
  • Knowledge of SONAR
  • Experience of platform-integration activities in dockyards or equivalent
  • Knowledge of Software engineering
  • Knowledge of RF comms
  • Knowledge of IT networking
  • Knowledge of Command Control, Communications and Computer Information systems (C4IS).
  • Experience of close-working relationships with Customers
  • Experience in estimating System Engineering tasks for complex engineering projects.
  • Involvement with integration, test and acceptance activities



Over 5 years


  • Demonstrable relevant systems engineering experience in the defence industry
  • Engineering Management experience
  • Strong analytical abilities with a methodical approach




  • DOORS practitioner
  • Working knowledge of architecture frameworks
  • System modelling skills (with either Rhapsody, Enterprise Architect or similar tool)
  • Industry-standard configuration control tools
  • Primavera trained user, or similar industry-standard planning tool
